If you’re a frequent JB-goer, you probably may have sighted a big Z logo near City Square. The Z Hotel is an unassuming hotel along Jalan Wong Ah Fook, right opposite the popular cafe area. It was one of the most affordable hotel option in the area, and here’s our Z Hotel Review.
In this Z Hotel Review:
Getting There
First, cross the bridge from the checkpoint towards City Square and enter City Square. Next, you will exit the mall through the office side of the building (look out for UOB and Maybank). From here, it will be about 5 minutes walk away.
Check-in
The hotel lobby is on the ground level and the main door is locked by access card. So you will have to wait for the staff to unlock for you. We were then promptly served at the check-in counter. Like most hotels do, they will provide a room for you if there is any available when you are early.
The Room
We stayed in the the Deluxe Room, available in King, Twin or Triple Beds. Based on the hotel’s layout, probably around 60% of the rooms will have an unobstructed view. We were lucky enough to get a bigger room as it is the corner unit, but we were not able to get a good view of the Johor Straits. Fortunately, our view is only slightly obstructed, overseeing the Jalan Dhoby area with low rise buildings.
The room came with 2 bottles of water, bath robes, bedroom slippers, kettle and hair dryer, all the basic amenities as you would expect from a hotel.
The Bed
The bed was slightly firm, without sinking in when you lie on it. A total of 4 soft pillows were provided.
The Toilet
The toilet was well lit, relatively clean and spacious but there were signs of age on the metal hardwares. We also spotted some small flies in the shower.
Basic amenities such as soap, toothbrushes and towels were provided. However, the toilet roll was already half used and there was no extra roll available. (We did run out of toilet paper right before we checked out.)
Facilities
We didn’t explore the food available in the hotel as there are many food options near the hotel. The hotel is a short walk to famous cafes such as Dona Bakehouse and Hiap Joo Bakery, making this an ideal hotel if you want to explore the cafe scene near the causeway.
Wifi
The wifi in the hotel is strong, I managed to have a zoom call during the stay.
The Service
Everything was rather well during our stay and hence we did not have a chance to experience the hotel’s service as we barely interacted with the hotel’s staff, except for during check in and check out.
Final Rating
We paid around SGD 60 for a night’s stay via Trip.com. Z Hotel is a fuss-free option, if you want an affordable hotel near the causeway. The location is really the selling point and was really convenient with lots of food options nearby.
Other point to note is that the pickup point of the hotel are occupied by parked cars, so there are a few occasions where the Grab drivers passed by the hotel as they thought the pickup point will be further down the road along the hotel’s perimeter.

If you want a hotel that is slightly more luxurious, Holiday Inn Johor Bahru may be a better option.
